Example schedule in detail
Arrival day: Pick up at airport/ferry. We drive to the hotel and have a relaxed day and afternoon. If you plan to arrive on an earlier date, we’ll happily help you arrange accommodation, if possible in the same hotel you’ll be staying at. First included meal together: we dance and eat (or the opposite) at an Ikarian panigiri, a night festival.
Day 2: Introduction to Ikaria and its unique characteristics. Walk through an ancient holm-oak forest; you’ll have the chance to learn about and smell blossoming wild herbs. This will be your first contact with one of the things that make Ikarians “immortals” - their mountains and their rich biodiversity. Choice: Afternoon travel writing class with Charlene or presentation on Greece’s current economy and culture.
Day 3: We meet a local Ikarian Honey producer and see how it’s collected, in the field. Walk to Ikaria’s old ‘anti-pirate’ hidden village in the mountains: Lagkada and presentation by Lefteris oOn Ikaria’s mountains and footpaths. Optional afternoon pottery workshop: you will get to keep what you create and it will have enough days to dry for you to get it back home.
Day 4: Full day excursion to the most wild and unexplored part of the island, Western Ikaria. We’ll walk to the most iconic lighthouse of the Aegean Sea, Kavo Papas Lighthouse. We will have a simple lunch at the village of Karkinagri where we can swim in some of the most crystal clear waters in the Aegean sea.
Day 5: Free Day. Optional botanical walk and visit to an organic soap factory. Early evening with a yoga session near the sea. All are welcome, even yoga newbies.
Day 6: Light walk to an old watermill and visit to a monastery. Second included meal together: we cook lunch with a local family using farm-fresh ingredients. Afternoon: tour in Ikaria’s best winery to find out how the local Ikarian wine is produced coupled with a wine tasting.
Day 7: Travel to the Eastern side of the island; we change hotel for two nights and stay at Faros. Walk to the other most iconic edge of Ikaria, the Drakano tower and the secluded, twin beaches. Presentation of Ikaria’s history from antiquity to middle ages. Optional visit to the island’s beer brewery. Free evening.
Day 8: Day excursion to the rock of Ikaris, the place where Ikarus fell into the sea. Afternoon SPA: optional thermal bath at the hamam and warm-springs at Therma, or bath at the open sea hot spring. Third included meal together: dinner. Night walk to the tower of Drakano to experience the most starry night you may ever see.
Day 9: Transport to the aiport. Depending on when your flight or ferry is leaving, we will have a breakfast together. We will happily help you to extend your visit, if you wish, before you arrive or during your stay.
