Example schedule in detail
Arrival day: Pick up at airport/ferry (Sep 7th). We drive to the hotel and have a relaxed day/afternoon checking in and exploring the seaside village. If you plan to arrive on an earlier date, we’ll happily help you arrange accommodation, if possible in the same hotel you’ll be staying at. First included meal together. At dinner we discuss the week’s activities
Day 2: Introduction to Ikaria and its unique characteristics. Walk through an ancient holm-oak forest; you’ll have the chance to learn about and smell Ikaria’s blossoming wild herbs. This will be your first contact with one of the things that make Ikarians “immortals” - their mountains and their rich biodiversity. Late lunch at one of Ikaria’s most beautiful fishing villages. Evening free. Option: (evening) presentation on today’s Greece and its culture.
Day 3: We meet a local Ikarian Honey producer and learn how honey is produced. Walk to Ikaria’s old ‘anti-pirate’ hidden village in the mountains: Lagkada and presentation by Lefteris on Ikaria’s mountains and footpaths. Optional afternoon pottery workshop: you will get to keep what you create and it will have enough days to dry for you to get it back home. Visit to Nas bay.
Day 4: Two groups (choose any of the two): 1. Lefteris leads a full day excursion to the most wild and unexplored part of the island, Western Ikaria. We’ll walk to the most iconic lighthouse of the Aegean Sea, Kavo Papas Lighthouse and have a simple lunch at the village of Karkinagri. 2. Charlene leads a nature walk up the Chalari River bed with an exercise on opening up the five senses, and then a visit to an organic soap factory. Optional - early evening with a yoga session near the sea. (All are welcome, even yoga newbies)
Day 5: Light walk through a forested area to an old restored watermill and visit to a monastery nestled in the mountains. Second included meal together: we cook lunch with a local family using farm-fresh ingredients. Afternoon: tour Ikaria’s famous winery to find out how the local Ikarian wine is produced, coupled with a wine tasting.
Day 6: Travel to the Eastern side of the island; we change hotel for two nights and stay at Faros. Walk to the other most iconic edge of Ikaria, the Drakano tower and the secluded, twin beaches. Learn about Ikaria’s history from antiquity to middle ages in the museum. Optional visit to the island’s new beer brewery - Ikariotissa. Free evening in Faros seaside village.
Day 7: Day excursion to the rock of Ikaris, the place where Icarus fell into the sea. Afternoon SPA: optional thermal bath at the hamam and warm-springs at Therma, or bath at the open sea hot spring. Third included meal together: dinner. Mystical night walk to the tower of Drakano to experience the most starry night you may ever see.
Day 8: Breakfast together, optional walk to a secluded beach. Transport to the airport/port for those who would be departing on day 8 (Sep 14th). We will happily help you to extend your visit, if you wish, before you arrive or during your stay.
*Participants can turn any day or 1/2 day to a free day to explore and experience on their own.
** Schedule will be adjusted to best accommodate weather changes, local conditions, etc.
